Planet Rock Performance

In July 2023, Leonard School of Dance staged an original production of “Planet Rock”, which was created by Founder and Director Helen Leonard-Taylor. The show was choreographed by Helen, along with fellow director, Michelle Widdison and assistant teacher, Shauna O’Connor.

Performed at The Nottingham Emmanuel School in West Bridgford, the show involved nearly 200 children and young people from the ages of 6 to 18 years who danced in 4 separate performances.

The audience, along with two earthlings were whisked back to the beginning of time and the formation of the planets with the help of a magic telescope presented to them by aliens visiting planet Earth. The eight planets were represented, as were stars, the sun and cosmic dust, together with the classical Greek elements, air, and fire.

Refreshments were served in the intervals and all the profit, (£941), was donated to the Graeae Theatre Company who support deaf and disabled performers.

On the Saturday evening performance, the audience was joined by a special guest, former student and professional dancer, Oscar Ward. Oscar, who has been dancing with English National Ballet will be moving to Germany in August to join the Leipzig Ballet.

Rory White, who danced one of the leading roles will be joining Trinity Laban, in September to study Composition and Dance. Rory composed one of the pieces of music used in the show, “To Precede a Journey Through Time”.

Former students returned to help backstage and front of house, and in the audience were several parents who were Leonard School students themselves, and who now bring their own children to the school. The school is now in its 43rd year and so it is not surprising that there are several second-generation children within the Leonard School family.
